613,490 votes(54.75%) vs 507,123 votes(45.25%),who won?

MEDIA STATEMENT

The people of Perak have been cheated of the more popular government that they deserve. PR Perak won 54.75% of the votes but BN forms the State Government

Pakatan Rakyat (PR) obtained 613,490 votes while Barisan Nasional (BN) obtained 507,123 votes for the State Constituencies contested in Perak for the just concluded 13th General Election but BN is forming the next Perak State Government. This is clearly unfair to the 54.75% of the voters who voted for PR compared to the 45.25% voters who voted for BN. This blatant gerrymandering favours the BN which enable it to win 31 seats compared to the 28 seats obtained by the PR. PR obtained 21% more votes if compared to the votes obtained by BN. The people of Perak have been cheated of a more popular PR State Government.

The PR elected representatives did not attend the swearing ceremony of Dato’ Seri Zambry Bin Abdul Kadir as Menteri Besar this morning because he does deserve the respect due to a Menteri Besar for the following 2 reasons:

i) He did respect the democratic will of the people when BN was not voted into power in the 2008 General Election. On 6/2/2009, he was one of the main players who used undemocratic means in toppling the democratic elected Pakatan Rakyat government of Perak.

ii) This time round, he is appointed as Menteri Besar against the wishes of the majority people of Perak.

I call on the Election Commission to restore the principle of equal representation for each vote in order that the election results will truly reflect the majority will of the people. The just concluded election saw the minority rural poor (many of whom are influenced by the BN government’s hand outs) override the views of the majority urban, better informed and educated Perakians.
